How to Choose Muay Thai Shorts

Selecting your first pair of Thai shorts can be a stressful endeavour, Shogun is here to make your choice, an easier one!

The right Muay Thai shorts should stay secure at your waist and give you room to kick, knee and move comfortably. While sleek designs might catch your eye first, sizing, cut and materials all deserve a closer look before you buy.

At Shogun, our Muay Thai shorts range includes Fairtex, Arwut, Tuff Sport, Wicked One and more, with traditional, retro and modern styles. Here’s how to find the right pair for your training.

Step 1: Always check the size guide: Thai and Western sizing are different!

Always review the size guide for the shorts you’re buying. Muay Thai shorts don’t follow one universal sizing system, and Thai sizing can fit smaller in comparison to Western sizing you might wear in everyday clothing.

Your usual medium or large won’t necessarily translate as fit can also vary between brands and between styles from the same brand, so owning one pair of Thai shorts doesn’t guarantee another will fit the same way.

Be sure to:

  • Measure around the point where you wear your waistband.
  • Compare your measurements with the product’s size guide.
  • Check whether the chart shows body measurements or garment dimensions.
  • Consider additional room you need around your hips and thighs.

If you’re between sizes, we highly recommend choosing the larger size for comfort.

Step 2: Choose a cut that suits your shape

The shape of your Thai shorts affects how they sit and feel during training.

Traditional Muay Thai shorts generally have a wider leg opening and a classic silhouette. Retro styles often have a shorter cut, while modern slim styles offer a more streamlined fit with mesh sides and slits for additional flexibility.

Within our range, two probable options worth comparing are:

Fairtex Slim Cut Muay Thai Shorts: A streamlined satin style with high side slits, an elastic waistband and an inner drawstring.

TUFF Double Tiger Retro Muay Thai Shorts: A short retro cut with side leg slits and lightweight microfibre fabric.

Think about whether you prefer extra room around your thighs, a shorter length or a closer fit. Whatever you choose, you should be able to lift your knees without the fabric pulling against your thigh.

Step 3: Look at the fabric and construction

Material can affect how your shorts feel, but the cut, waistband and seams matter too.

Be sure to check each product description rather than assuming every pair from a brand uses the same fabric.

Your waistband should hold your shorts securely without digging in when you bend, rotate or breathe deeply.

If the shorts have a drawstring, which most do, use it to adjust the fit. You shouldn’t need to pull it excessively tight to keep them in place.

A comfortable waist doesn’t always mean the whole pair fits correctly. Thai shorts can feel right around your waist but still be too restrictive through the thighs. Check both before starting to train.

Step 4: Test your movement

When trying on Muay Thai shorts, move through a few controlled actions:

  • Lift each knee towards your chest.
  • Lower into a comfortable squat.
  • Raise your leg into a kick position.
  • Step and turn through your stance.

Notice whether the fabric catches across your thighs or the waistband shifts.
If you keep adjusting the shorts, try a different size or cut.

Don't forget to choose a design you enjoy wearing
